Do Hidden Dog Fences Hurt Dogs?

There are a few pet owners who want to understand how an electric invisible fence works, and if it harms their dogs. They hear expressions like electric fences and shock collars, which gives the impression of being very painful. Some animal right activists think that using any form of electrical training products are bad for dogs and so misrepresent all electric dog training methods.

When you study how a wireless or underground PetSafe fence works, you will understand how humane they are. The correction a dog receives is similar to a static shock and is designed to startle or certainly get your dogs attention. The idea is to replicate how a mother dog will chastise her puppy. If the puppy dog annoys the mother dog, then there is every chance the puppy will get a little bite. The puppy dog will quickly learn and starts to behave. And so you will find the electric dog fence works in a similar fashion, as soon as the dog tries to go where it shouldn’t, it receives a static shock. It is not cruel but it is very effective.

Often dogs when let loose in the back yard like to escape by jumping the fence or burrowing their way underneath it. What makes the situation worse is having a pet dog that is difficult to train, is very disobedient and if anything feel that they are the master of you and so takes no notice of your instructions about not escaping over the fence. So what are your options; don’t let the dog out or chain it up. Those options sound pretty inhumane to me.

Because a dog fence cost quite a bit of money, dog owners put a lot of thought into it before buying one. Often they buy a dog fence as a last resort because they don’t want to chain their pets up or not let them out by themselves and of course if it a guard dog, you want it to roam outside. If a dog does escape it runs the risk of being run over if it gets out on the road and I have heard some people who get into a lot of hot water because their dogs escape and chase other pets or farm animals. If a farmer catches a dog chasing his animals, then he has every right to shoot it dead. So when you think about these problems, it makes the electric dog fence a very humane option.

The great news is that if you are looking for a dog fence, the new ones are very easy to set-up. They cater for any number of dogs, and as they are invisible, they are very discrete.

One Response to “Do Hidden Dog Fences Hurt Dogs?”

  1. We have a terrier-mix dog. We tried to train him and he got several shocks, but he run back to the house. On the second day, he ran from us and ran across the “barrier”. He received a 30 second shock and he wasn’t the same. I don’t know if was physically hurt, or if he is severely scared. He will not come out of his dog house and he doesn’t seem to have any interest…even with “treats”. Is this normal???
